Vincenzo Bellini (1801-1835)

Vincenzo Bellini brought the soft, sentimental melancholy of the early romantic period to his operas. Harmony and orchestration are not his strongest points, but in terms of expressive melodies his are unparalleled. His operas are still performed, despite the limited number of singers who can perform them.

The most well-known opera of Bellini is Norma. The most famous aria from it is undoubtedly Casta Diva.

This is the libretto from the performance in Milan in 1833. The text of this opera is by Felice Romani (1788-1865). The title role was played by the soprano Giuseppina Ronzi de Begnis (1800-1853).

"The fine facial features and blond hair of Bellini as well as his delicate manners, hide a man full of energy with an outspoken will", according to Mary Ann Smart.
