Romanticism

The arrival of romanticism in Italian opera did not cause an abrupt rupture in style, but slowly infiltrated the opera world. The new style replaced the mythological themes with a preference for historical subjects. Passion and conflict take place in mysterious, frequently dark and distance locations.

Love and death remain the central themes, but human emotions are more intense when set to music. Melody, harmony, color and musical form are all used to realize emotional depth.
